For the last three years Tony Hawk has been using Twitter to set up treasure hunts for his products. He saw the value in Twitter and how the information traveled so quickly and decided he could use it as a form of promotion and way to connect to his fans. His first time he hid a skateboard in a bush and tweeted the location, by the time he was back at his office a fan had tweeted back with a picture of himself and the board. He has now expanded the hunt globally and does it once a year. This is a great form of promoting himself and his company and this kind of technique using Twitter can inspire other companies to try similar techniques. http://www.entrepreneur.com/video/223326
Thats a great idea.Vermont based Rome snowboards did something simillar using facebook. They put up banners in various states and gave away products to those who found the banners. anything that engages your readers is bound to be a key sucess point for marketing products.
ReplyDeleteI also think this is a great idea. I think it makes the Twitter users more engaged by physically having to go out and doing something rather than simply reading their Twitter streams. Like Dan said, engaging your audience is definitely a key point for marketing products and I think this example that Dylan has talked about shows this.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to market. It keeps people on there toes, and it forces them to keep checking the twitter page. Although Ray Allen isn't really trying to sell anything, he used to do this Around the Boston area. He would leave new shoes, or other basketball gear and people would line up to try to find it. It is not only fun for the customers but also the marketer.
ReplyDeleteI think this works because it forces fans/customers to take action. Like we read in "Made To Stick," the most effective means of getting what you want is by making someone take action. This also means making the person care about what they are doing. I think it is key for businesses to realize that unique connections with customers is what creates lasting relationships and interest.
ReplyDeleteThis technique is also a great way for him to develop his brand as one who really wants to interact with his fans, give them a new way to compete and have fun, and give fans a tangible reward for following him. Hawke is definitely using his Twitter page in the "right" way, by making it about the relationship between him and his fans and encouraging their engagement with his brand.
